biography

Rick Borutta began his professional career working backstage at the Whole Theatre Company in Montclair, N.J. with Olympia Dukakis as producer. He apprenticed as a stage manager at the Burt Reynolds Jupiter Theatre, earning his AEA card. There he met Tommy Tune and his Tuneful Productions Company and was brought on board for the Broadway production of Tommy Tune Tonite! at the Gershwin Theatre. Rick continued stage managing for 15 years in regional, touring, Off-Broadway, and Broadway workshop productions, ending up as personal assistant and stage manager for Elaine Stritch while creating Elaine Stritch: At Liberty, which ran Off-Broadway, Broadway, in London’s West End, and on the road, culminating with an HBO documentary of the same name in which he appears. For CBS News, Rick produced one of the earliest network live-streaming news programs, Backstage Live, which ran for over two years and also covered the Tony Awards. As a video producer Rick assisted with special projects for 60 Minutes and 48 Hours. Following his interest in the Esalen Institute and personal development Rick began studying astrology and the depth psychology of C. G. Jung, leading to his role as a counselor in astrological chart readings for dozens of clients. This experience also unearthed his deep desire to write stories from dreamwork, inner guidance, active imagination, and memoir with an aim to give audiences a unique view into the transformative qualities of theatre and storytelling. Rick has written and performed Nobody's Bitch, a solo-show about his years as personal assistant to Elaine Stritch to sold-out houses in California and New York. Samuel Beckett Unborn is Rick's first multi-character play and there are other projects in development.
